Ancient period
  • Bihar was part of the ancient kingdom of Magadha, which was one of the 16 Mahajanapadas of ancient India.
  • Magadha was ruled by the Nanda Dynasty and later by the Maurya Empire, under the reign of Emperor Ashoka.
  • The city of Pataliputra, now known as Patna, was the capital of the Maurya Empire.
Medieval period
  • Bihar was ruled by several dynasties, including the Gupta Empire, the Pala Empire, and the Sena Dynasty.
  • The Buddhist monk, scholar and translator, Atisha, spent time at the Vikramashila and Nalanda Universities in Bihar during the 11th century.
  • Bihar was also a centre of learning and culture during this period.
Modern period
  • The British East India Company gained control over Bihar in the 18th century and established the city of Patna as the capital of Bihar and Orissa Province.
  • After India gained independence in 1947, Bihar became a state of India in 1950.
  • In the 1970s, Bihar experienced a period of political instability and violence, known as the "Emergency" period.
  • Since then, Bihar has made progress in various fields and has seen significant economic growth in recent years.
